No, you do not have to use your healthcare insurance coverage if you choose not to. You may pay privately.
Some prefer to use their insurance as they pay a copay just like you would for a general medical appointment, for the most part. Some prefer to start with their company's Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which offers usually 3-5 sessions, at no charge to them (no copay). Others prefer to pay cash (no insurance or EAP) because they do not want an insurance trail tracking their mental health sessions.
