Ask questions. How long has he or she been in practice. What sort of experience do they have? Suggest a phone consult or face-to-face interview. Some therapists offer free consults to see if you are a good match.
Therapy is a very important process and not to be taken lightly. You, and your therapist, should know if it is a good match by the 2nd or 3rd session. If it doesn't "feel" right to you, process this with your therapist. A competent therapist will accept your feedback and questions with honesty. If it is not a good match after all, your therapist may prove to be a great resource for you in finding the "right" match.
Just ask.
