Therapy is a general term used to describe psychotherapy. Sometimes the term therapy is used interchangeably with the term counseling. Without going into too much detail, usually one would benefit from psychotherapy/counseling during highly stressful times in life, during major life transitions, when relationships are challenged, when trying antidepressants, mood stabilizers or other medications that might treat emotional issues or mood disorders, for example.Usually therapy sessions last for 45-50mins in a therapist's office. Frequency of sessions: 1x per week to 1x every other week for several weeks or months at a time.

Possible reasons for seeking therapy:  marital discord, problems at school, anger management, sexual or physical abuse current or past, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, drinking or other drug problems, chronic illness, grieving death of a loved one, coming out as related to sexual orientation, etc.
